UUM ONLINE: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) researcher, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fauziah Abdul Rahim from the School of Education and Modern Languages (SEML) initiated a project called 'Literacy for Life' with the aim to provide materials and resources for the EDUWEBTV programme under the Educational Technology Division (BTP), the Ministry of Education Malaysia. BTP has been entrusted with the task to provide resources for EDUWEBTV.
Thus, 'Literacy for Life: Creating Educational TV Programmes through the Affective Way' project was initiated to integrate technology, knowledge and academic expertise for the benefits of the BTP community. This project also saw the involvement of other researchers namely; Dr. Sarimah Shaik Abdullah (SEML); Dr. Husniza Husni from the School of Computing (SOC) and Dr. Sobihatun Nur Abdul Salam from the School of Multimedia Technology and Communication (SMMTC) along with eight graduate interns.
Dr. Fauziah said, 'Literacy for Life' is a concept which emphasises the empowerment of individuals in the community by providing them with basic education that will influence the future of individuals.
"The transfer of knowledge exercise is an opportunity for academics to contribute to the community through knowledge sharing activities. BTP community utilises the guidelines and rubrics to prepare materials and resources that will be shared with stakeholders (especially teachers) to provide more attractive teaching and learning environments, and at the same time promote the concept of lifelong learning. "
"The ripple effect of the knowledge transfer programme is also expected to take place between stakeholders and the general public including teachers and students. We are pleased that this programme is also in line with the motto of our university which emphasises the importance of knowledge, virtue and service,” added Dr. Fauziah.
The project is recognised as one of the six best projects at the International Conference on Knowledge Transfer Programme (ICKT'15) held at the Marriott Hotel, Putrajaya last December. BTP Producer, Suras Kanagasabai said that BTP received encouraging comments from the audience through this project and they hope that the cooperation between BTP and UUM will continue and more high quality programmes based on researches can be produced.
The researchers also received a gold medal at the 25th International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX'14) held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) in 2014 through a project called the Interactive Affective Mediation for English Literacy Development (I-AM-ELDe) and a silver medal at PECIPTA 2015 for the second version of the Interactive Affective Mediation for English Literacy Development version 2.0.
